Summit Ecuador’s Highest Peak
Day 1: Quito – Chimborazo Base Camp
We’ll depart Quito early in the morning, embarking on a scenic drive along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, where towering peaks and rolling Andean landscapes set the stage for our adventure. Along the way, we pass indigenous villages and high-altitude páramo, offering glimpses of Ecuador’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
After several hours on the road, we arrive at Chimborazo’s Reserve Entrance, where we begin a short acclimatization hike to Carrel Refuge (4,850 m / 15,912 ft). This trek allows us to adjust gradually to the increasing altitude while enjoying breathtaking views of Chimborazo’s glacier-covered slopes.
At the refuge, we settle in, enjoy a hearty meal, and review the plan for the climb ahead. The afternoon is dedicated to rest and preparation, ensuring we are fully acclimated and ready for the ascent. Before nightfall, we’ll take a short hike to explore the surrounding terrain, watching the sun cast golden hues over the Andean peaks.

Day 2: Carrel Refuge – High Camp – Summit Attempt
After a nourishing breakfast, we continue our ascent, trekking toward High Camp (5,300 m / 17,388 ft). This short but crucial stretch helps us further adjust to the altitude, ensuring our bodies are ready for the final push to the summit.
Once at High Camp, we rest and hydrate, preparing for the midnight ascent. A briefing with our guides covers essential safety measures and climbing techniques. After an early dinner, we settle in for a few hours of rest before the real challenge begins.
Around midnight, we gear up and begin the summit attempt, navigating the steep, icy terrain under a sky full of stars. Using crampons and ice axes, we ascend the glacier, tackling the final stretch toward the summit. The climb is demanding but rewarding, requiring steady pacing and determination.

As the first light of dawn paints the sky, the views from the top are simply breathtaking. The vast Andean landscape stretches in every direction, a reward for the effort and perseverance required to reach this legendary peak.
After capturing the moment and taking in the incredible scenery, we begin our descent back to High Camp, then continue down to Carrel Refuge. Here, we enjoy a well-earned breakfast before making our way back to Quito, reflecting on an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes.
