As we set out on the trail, we ascend through rolling páramo landscapes, crossing highland valleys and rugged terrain. The path follows ancient Inca trade routes, offering a glimpse into Ecuador’s rich history and breathtaking natural beauty.

Along the way, we pass herds of llamas and traditional indigenous farms, immersing ourselves in the serene Andean environment. We set up camp near the shores of a tranquil high-altitude lake, enjoying a warm meal under the vast mountain skies.

Day 2: High Mountain Passes – Culebrillas Lake – Inca Ruins

After breakfast, we continue our ascent, reaching the highest point of the trek at around 4,200 m (13,780 ft). From here, the views are spectacular, with sweeping panoramas of the rugged mountains and untouched Andean wilderness.

We then descend toward Culebrillas Lake, a serene, windswept body of water believed to have been a sacred site for the Inca. Following the ancient stone pathway, we traverse narrow ridges and lush valleys, gradually approaching the first Inca ruins along the trail.

By late afternoon, we set up camp near the remains of an Inca tambo, an ancient resting place once used by messengers traveling the Qhapaq Ñan, the Inca Road System. After a well-earned meal, we rest under the starlit Andean sky, surrounded by the echoes of history.

Trekking Highlights:

  • Summit the highest pass of the trek (4,200 m / 13,780 ft)

  • Descend to the mystical Culebrillas Lake

  • Follow the well-preserved Inca Road through remote highlands

Day 3: Final Trek to Ingapirca – Explore Ecuador’s Largest Inca Ruins

On the final day, we hike the last stretch of the trail, following well-defined Inca stone pathways as we descend into the valley of Ingapirca. As we approach Ecuador’s most famous Inca archaeological site, the landscape shifts to rolling green hills dotted with traditional farms.

Upon arrival at Ingapirca, we explore the impressive ruins, learning about the history of the site and its significance as both a fortress and a religious temple. The Temple of the Sun, an elliptical stone structure built with remarkable precision, stands as a testament to the Inca’s architectural mastery.
