Difficulty Levels
All our adventures range from moderate to very difficult. We typically classify our day hikes as moderate, our treks as difficult, and mountaineer adventures as extremely difficult. Why? Day hikes can very yes but normally are simply just a day and limited on miles and vertical gain. Our treks may be longer distances and be longer trips but generally have no special equipment or route finding on difficult terrain. Mountaineering on glaciated terrain is not for the faint of heart, so we classify it as our most difficult adventures even if it may be less mileage or days. It simply involves more than our hikes and treks do.
Moderate
Are moderate trips typically involve moderate to challenging terrain with some elevation gain. It’s usually a mix of uphill, flat, and downhill sections, requiring a good level of fitness but not extreme endurance. Expect to spend several hours on the trail, and while the terrain may have some steep or rocky sections, the overall difficulty is manageable for most with basic hiking experience. It’s an ideal choice for those looking for a bit of a challenge but not a strenuous climb.
Challenging
These hikes demand good physical fitness, with steep ascents, rocky paths, and longer durations, often extending across multiple days. You’ll cover longer distances, face significant elevation gains, and navigate difficult terrain, all while dealing with higher altitudes and possibly unpredictable weather. They are ideal for experienced hikers seeking a strenuous experience, requiring stamina and a solid level of preparation, though not venturing into extreme conditions.
Formidable
These trips require advanced mountaineering skills, such as technical ice climbing, glacier navigation, and rock climbing. You’ll be dealing with extreme altitudes, long and difficult days, and highly demanding conditions. Expect unpredictable weather, cold temperatures, and the need for specialized equipment like crampons, ice axes, and ropes. These are meant for experienced climbers who can handle the physical and mental demands of the mountain, requiring preparation, training, and a deep understanding of mountaineering techniques.
