Day 1: Quito – Cuicocha Lagoon – Quito

We will pick you up from your hotel in Quito early in the morning and set out on a scenic drive through the rolling Andean highlands, passing charming indigenous villages and breathtaking mountain landscapes. After about two hours, we will arrive at Cuicocha Lagoon, a stunning volcanic crater lake located at the base of Cotacachi Volcano.

Our hike begins along the crater’s rim, offering spectacular panoramic views of the deep blue waters and the two lush islands formed by past eruptions. The trail winds through páramo grasslands and Andean forests, with moderate ascents and descents providing the perfect mix of challenge and reward. Along the way, you’ll witness incredible biodiversity, from vibrant high-altitude flowers to soaring Andean condors.

For those looking to enhance their experience, there will be time to descend closer to the water’s edge, adding an extra challenge with 335 meters (1,100 feet) of elevation gain and 2 km (1.25 miles) of extra hiking. Once at the lake, you can soak in the serene beauty of this sacred site before making the return ascent.

After finishing the trek, we’ll enjoy a well-earned meal at a local restaurant before heading back to Quito, ending a day filled with adventure, culture, and breathtaking views.
