Cotopaxi 3-Day Climb:

Summit One of the World’s Highest Active Volcanoes

Day 1: Quito – Cotopaxi National Park – Refuge Acclimatization

We begin our adventure with an early departure from Quito, traveling through the Avenue of the Volcanoes, where Cotopaxi’s iconic snow-capped peak dominates the horizon. Along the way, we pass through high-altitude páramo, home to wild horses, Andean condors, and other unique wildlife.

Upon arrival at Cotopaxi National Park, we take an acclimatization hike to José Rivas Refuge (4,864 m / 15,958 ft). This short trek helps us adjust to the altitude while offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We settle in at the refuge, enjoy a warm meal, and go over the plan for the climb ahead. The afternoon is dedicated to rest, preparation, and final gear checks, ensuring we’re ready for the summit push.

Acclimatization Highlights:

  • Scenic drive through the Avenue of the Volcanoes

  • Acclimatization hike to José Rivas Refuge

  • Stunning views of Cotopaxi’s glacier-covered slopes

  • Final briefing and gear check for the climb

Day 2: Ice Training – Glacier Hike – Summit Preparation

After breakfast, we head to Cotopaxi’s glacier for a crucial ice-climbing training session. Under the guidance of expert mountaineers, we practice using crampons, ice axes, and harnesses, ensuring we are comfortable with the techniques needed for the ascent. This session builds confidence and prepares us for navigating the icy terrain during the summit push.

We return to the refuge for an early dinner and a few hours of rest. Around midnight, we gear up and begin our ascent under the stars, climbing through volcanic rock and ice fields towards the summit.

Climbing Highlights:

  • Hands-on glacier training with expert guides

  • Rest and acclimatization at high altitude

  • Midnight summit attempt, climbing through rugged terrain and glaciers

Day 3: Summit – Descent – Return to Quito

In the early morning, we reach Cotopaxi’s summit (5,897 m / 19,347 ft), standing at one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. From the top, we witness a breathtaking sunrise, with panoramic views of Ecuador’s Andean peaks, crater, and glaciers.

After taking in the moment and capturing photos, we begin the descent back to José Rivas Refuge, then continue to the park entrance. From there, we drive back to Quito, reflecting on an unforgettable high-altitude mountaineering experience.
